Knee replacement
Joint replacement means replacing the worn surfaces of the knee joint with artificial ones. The operation relieves pain and restores the ability to walk and bend the leg. Dr. Alok Bansal performs primary, complex and revision operations. To ask a question, message the doctor on Instagram or call.
When surgery is considered
Knee replacement is discussed in cases of severe pain and limited movement, when medication, physiotherapy and offloading of the joint no longer help. Typical conditions:
- Advanced gonarthrosis (osteoarthritis of the knee joint).
- Post-traumatic arthritis after fractures and ligament injuries.
- Rheumatoid arthritis affecting the knee.
- Marked deformity of the limb axis (valgus, varus).
- Instability or wear of a previously placed implant, revision operation.
How it is done
The surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and a thin layer of bone and places the implant components on the femur and tibia, replacing the kneecap surface if needed. The replacement may be total or partial (unicompartmental), depending on how widespread the damage is. The operation is planned from the images and axial measurements.
Recovery
- Movement of the knee and walking with support begin early, usually the next day.
- What matters in the first weeks is regaining the range of bending and the strength of the quadriceps muscle.
- Full recovery of function takes approximately a few months of regular exercises.
- Follow-up visits after discharge. How to choose a rehabilitation center.
Exact timing depends on the case, the doctor gives it at the consultation.
