When surgery is considered

Joint replacement is discussed when pain and limited movement significantly reduce quality of life and conservative treatment no longer helps. Typical conditions:

• Advanced coxarthrosis (osteoarthritis of the hip joint).
• Avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
• Consequences of a femoral neck fracture and fractures around the joint.
• Rheumatoid and post-traumatic arthritis.
• Hip dysplasia in adults.
• Instability or wear of a previously placed implant, revision operation.

How it is done

The surgeon removes the damaged parts of the joint and places the implant: a component in the acetabulum (hip socket) and a stem in the femur. The type of fixation (cemented or uncemented) and the implant model are chosen according to age, bone quality and the patient's level of activity. Recovery

• Standing and walking with support, as a rule, the next day.
• The first weeks: gradually increasing load and exercises with a physical therapist.
• Return to everyday life in approximately a few weeks, full recovery in a few months.
